A well attended event, an interesting talk, a good Q and A discussion, an enjoyable social in the pub afterwards! Thanks to The Freedom Association for co-hosting the event with us.
This Friday (26th), at 6pm in H1.48, Warwick Libertarians will be hosting a talk entitled “How free trade, free markets and liberal institutions can help to alleviate global poverty”.
Julian Harris is Director of Liberal Vision and an active member of the Liberal Democrats. He is an economics reporter at City AM, having spent three years working on development issues in poor countries at the think tank International Policy Network. He has recently appeared in media outlets such as Newsnight and the Spectator. Commenting on a variety of political subjects this year, he has also appeared on the Daily Politics, BBC Radio 4’s Moral Maze, several BBC 5 Live programmes, and has been published internationally, in newspapers such as The Times, The Australian, Wall Street Journal (Europe), Sunday Telegraph, Business Day (South Africa), South China Morning Post, Business Daily (Kenya) and Financial Express (India). He has a Masters in Public Policy and has been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Illinois.
The event is free, and people of all political opinions are welcome to attend.
The talk should finish at around 7.15pm.
We’ll be heading to the Duck afterwards, where you can get a FREE drink courtesy of The Freedom Association.
We hope to see you there!

David Davis MP will not be speaking to us this Thursday – he has had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. Our next event will be on 26th November, when Julian Harris, Director of Liberal Vision, will be speaking on global poverty and what to do about it.
4od Britain’s Trillion Pound Horror Story (Originally broadcast 9pm 11/11/10)
It’s good to see more publicity for the TPA, Adam Smith Institute, and IEA.
For more ideas, I thought this was a good read: Maurice P. McTigue lectures on some of the achievements of a reform government elected in 1984 in New Zealand.
Chris Mounsey speaks on ‘What is Libertarianism?’

See you there!
Thanks to all those who made it to our welcome social last week – it was great to see that so many new people want to get involved in the society this year.
If you took a leaflet from us at the Societies Fair, you may have seen that we had a bar crawl of Leamington planned for Friday of week 3. This is now cancelled, given that the Politics Society are running pretty much the same event on the same day.
Our next event is now 3rd November, when Chris Mounsey will be speaking on “What is Libertarianism?” – more details on that coming soon!
Thanks to all those who joined us yesterday at the Societies Fair.
If you haven’t done so yet, you can still sign up online here:

Or feel free to just come along to our events and see what we’re about.
Our facebook group is here:

If you are having difficulty joining, it is probably because you’re not a member of the Warwick network.
First social:
Meet us in the Dirty Duck at 7pm on Thursday of Week 2 (14th October) – we’ll put up a few posters so you’ll be able to spot us. If you’re going to the Freshers Ball later that night, you can still stop by for a drink or two just to meet us and say hello.
Hope to see you all soon!
Welcome back to Warwick everyone!
Warwick Libertarians will be at the Societies Fair tomorrow, where you can join us or just find out more about us. We even have some free books to give away to our members this year!
On Thursday of week 2, at 7pm in the Dirty Duck, we’re having our first welcome social – we look forward to seeing you there!
We’ve also lined up some excellent speakers for this year, starting with Chris Mounsey, leader of the Libertarian Party, who is giving our introductory talk, ‘What is Libertarianism?’ on 3rd November.
All the best,
The Exec
We have a lot of things to pack into our first event of term three:
Election of a treasurer / Handover to the new exec / Society Awards night / Election night party
All of this is kicking off on Thursday (6th May) from 7pm in the Dirty Duck and then from 8pm onwards in the Union. All members are invited to come along. More details on facebook.

Cosmopolitanism: The end of Nation States and World Government?
In our final talk of the year we welcome Steven Davies from the IHS to Warwick to talk to us about Cosmopolitanism and arguments against the Nation State and World Government tonight (Wednesday) at 6.30pm.
In an increasingly interconnected world, perhaps emphasised at Warwick by the multiculturalism we can see on campus, are old-fashioned notions of the Nation State still applicable? Has economic globalisation made redundant the role Government as a whole? Steven Davies will use his extensive knowledge of the history of economics and politics to argue his case. The event is free for all to attend and will last no longer than an hour and a half including Q&As. Hope to see you there.
When: Wed wk9, 6.30pm
Where: SO.09 (Social studies)

Warwick Libertarians exist to develop and promote an approach to politics which recognises first and foremost the dignity of the individual. We are united by our opposition to attempts to understand and devise public policy by dividing people into groups - for example, through such labels as class, creed and colour - and we instead favour an approach based on personal, economic, social and civil liberty in which the emphasis is on people, not on institutions or collectives.
We are a non-partisan group, at least in terms of conventional political parties, and we welcome healthy debate and diversity of opinion. We do not recognise libertarianism as a philosophy either of the right or of the left; neither do we claim that there is one true doctrine to which all libertarians must subscribe.
We exist in the hope that we can raise awareness at the University of Warwick of an approach to politics which often seems absent from political discourse, and to invite the students and staff of the university to join us in exploring what libertarianism means today.
